3OH!3

Biography:

Sean Foreman and Nathaniel Mott were born into humble beginnings in their small town of Boulder, Colorado (i.e. area code 303). It was always about having fun for these two lyrical extraordinaires; Sean could always be found in his parent’s basement with his eyes locked on his computer screen clicking “accept” to every friend-request on 3OH!3’s Myspace page, while taking a few moments to write down the newest stream of lyrics formed in his head that would become their latest hit. Across town, Nat worked hard on the band’s beats in what he calls his “dungeon” apartment, changing the definition of hip-hop forever. The band’s 2007 self-released album became their ticket to fame and fortune, as it was shipped across the United States and dropped into the lap of Photo Finish Records president, Matthew Galle. 3OH!3’s first single, “Don’t Trust Me,” worked it’s way up the charts for 15 months straight before it attained the No. 1 spot at pop radio, went double platinum, and sold over 2.6 million tracks. 3OH!3 is best known for their dedication to their fans and wild live shows, especially their national series of shows on the 2008 Warped Tour. 3OH!3 is currently on the ‘Too Fast For Love Tour’ with Cobra Starship, Travie McCoy, and We Fight Dragons, and is hard to work on their third album, Streets of Gold, to be released in June 2010.

Characteristics of Musical Style:

Colorado Sunrise by 3OH!3 (WANT)

3OH!3's unique brand of music can only be described as nothing anyone's ever heard before. Their beats are a mix of hip-hop, rock, and techno, and never cease to contain the shock factor that their fans know oh so well. The song, "Colorado Sunrise," is one of my personal favorite songs from their second album 'WANT' which was released in 2008, and was written about 3OH!3's personal experiences while trying to find, simply put, who they are. The song is a smoothly blended mix of alternative rock and techno, and has a catchy beat that listeners can't help but dance to. 3OH!3's lyrical genius comes from a mix of their favorite artists, including Michael McDonald, Seal, R. Kelly, L.L. Cool J, and Boys II Men. The rhythm of the song itself, is fast paced, beginning slowly, with each note perfectly hit during the bridge and during the chorus. "Colorado Sunrise" is one of the few songs in which Sean and Nat both legitimately sing, rather than rap, and contains one of the many beats created by Nat on his infamous keyboard. The song has a basic structural pattern, and begins with a bridge, then flows into the first verse, the bridge, and then to the chorus; the song continues this way until it finishes. "Colorado Sunrise" would seem to be especially sentimental to the boys because it was named after their hometown and describes personal times, mistakes that they wish they could take back, and those dirty habits that make them who they are. The overall sound and feel of the music is incredibly enjoyable and i can clearly hear piano throughout the song. The mix of vocal volume and instrucment are effective and contribute to what makes 3OH!3's music so catchy and danceable. The first time I heard "Colorado Sunrise," I was in a study hall with one of my best friends and it had been stuck in her head for days. The lyrics, "I am, what I am, what I am, what I am, a trainwreck," would be forever stuck in my head as well, and I can't help but dance in my seat whenever i hear it. I enjoy listening to this song particularly because in most of 3OH!3's songs, the listener rarely gets to hear Sean and Nat sing, and Nat's sections are not easily distinguished from Sean's; yet, in "Colorado Sunrise," the listener can clearly tell who is singing at that point in time, and the musicality of both of their voices is clear and in your face. 3OH!3 will always have that shock factor, whether it's because of their raunchy lyrics, explicit verses, or insanely catchy beats, and will continue to blow the minds of their fans in the future.
